Amid nonstop sirens and unusually loud gunfire, Mani, the caregiver, called 93-year-old Mutzi into the safe room. Mutzi, a kibbutz founder who previously refused shelter, understood this time was different. They remained locked in for hours without food or water, until Mani cautiously fetched bread, cheese, and water. Throughout the day, Mani stayed in touch with Mutzi’s children. That evening, Mutzi’s grandson arrived with instructions to prepare for evacuation, under military escort, to the children’s house. They were later evacuated to Eilat, where Mutzi’s condition rapidly deteriorated. Describing a loving father and son bond, Mani remained by Mutzi’s side until his passing on January 13. He now cares for another family and hopes to return soon to the kibbutz.
