Ly Ann, a Filipina caregiver for an elderly man and his wife with dementia, initially ignored repeated Red Alerts as she prepared their breakfast. Throughout the day, she received safety updates from the couple's children and guidance from a friend on locking the safe room. During the crisis, the elderly woman briefly wandered outside to take out the trash. As a mother to a 12-year-old daughter, she questioned her responsibilities to her clients, her child, and herself. Reflecting on the day’s events—from hiding in the safe room and managing makeshift facilities to evacuating to shelters and hotels—Ly Ann remembers a friend who was brutally murdered, the anxiety from the life-threatening experience and her ambivalence about the future.
