Raymond, a firefighter from the Netherlands, immigrated to Nahal Oz with his wife and family and joined the Kibbutz’s dairy management team. On October 7, he overslept and missed his morning run and woke up to Red Alert. The family went into the safe room and took turns holding the door handle while trying to understand what was happening in the kibbutz, despite language difficulties. After long hours, the family was evacuated to safety with the community. Raymond was worried about the cows and the dairy and almost immediately started planning his return. By October 10, he and a small team returned to Nahal Oz, escorted by the IDF, and went back to work, in what remained a war zone.
He’s proud of the team’s success in getting the dairy to full operation but remains uncertain about the family and kibbutz’s future. Despite that and despite the experience of living by the border, Raymond still stands by the family’s decision to immigrate to Israel.
